Join the lab

Thank you for your interest in the Pringle Lab! We are curious and friendly folks who like to grapple with complexity in our science and enjoy a great adventure (and a good story).

We work on diverse projects spanning continents and ecosystems (visit our research page to learn more). We value diversity in people, ideas, and opinions. We strive to be worthy ambassadors of the U.S. in our foreign field sites and of academia in our local ones.

Life in the Pringle Lab

We have a weekly lab meeting, as well as a weekly meeting with the broader group of related labs at UNR (the PIG - Plant-Insect Group). I also meet weekly one-on-one with graduate students and postdocs.

The aim of one-on-one meetings are to stay in close communication about project development and and logistics, and for me to provide support in any way that I can. My goals are to be both collaborator and cheerleader.

At any given time, we have 3-5 undergraduate students working in the lab. Undergraduates are usually paired with a graduate student or postdoc so that they have two layers of mentoring, a close supervisory one from the student and a high-level one from me.

I try to expose undergraduates to the full research experience. They are invited to join lab meetings, discuss papers, and formulate their own research project ideas.

A note about funding

Admitted graduate students are guaranteed stipend and tuition support for the typically ~6-year duration of their PhD. To fund their research, students apply for graduate-student-specific funding with my help and feedback, and/or I simultaneously look for students who are interested in my own funded projects or in projects that I could foresee funding.

I will post postdoc openings on the site when I have a funded opportunity, but I am also very willing to sponsor postdocs who wish to apply for independent funding to join the lab.

Opportunities

Undergraduate students

If you are an undergraduate student looking to get involved in research, we may have the project for you! Interested applicants should contact Dr. Pringle.

Please include your major, your CV, and a short description of your interests in biology.

Graduate students

Prospective graduate students can apply to the Pringle Lab through the Graduate Program in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology. Both PhD and master’s programs are available.

Interested applicants should first contact Dr. Pringle with a short statement of interest. This statement should include why you want to attend graduate school, why you are interested in my lab, the names and contact information for 3 references, and a CV including past research experience and applicable undergraduate and/or master's coursework.

Applications for the regular cycle are due in December each year, and there is a Nov 1 deadline for spring admissions.

Postdocs

Please email me if you are interested in doing postdoctoral research in the lab. I am not currently recruiting for a funded position, but I am happy to explore other funding opportunities with you.

Please include your CV, representative publications, and a short description of your research interests.
